This was the first fossil star reported from West Virginia. It was found by a fisherman in Tucker County. A few others have been found since then in the same river. Starfish are echinoderms and closely related to crinoids, brittle stars, sea urchins, sand dollars and sea cucumbers. Although they may appear very different, echinoderms all have two major defining characteristics that set them apart from all other animals: a water vascular system and five-sided radial symmetry. Devonaster lived during the Devonian Period 416-360 million years ago.
This specimen measures 8.5 x 5-inch matrix with a 3-inch starfish.
