Mammuthus primigenius was the true Woolly Mammoth. This piece of authentic tusk is at least 20,000 years old. It was dredged up in fishing nets from the North Sea. The sea was once dry land during the late Pleistocene, Ice Age. Sea levels were up to 300 feet lower than today. Mammoths were up to 15 feet tall at the shoulder and weighed 6-8 tons. They had great curved tusks up to 16 feet long. Some species of mammoths were covered with thick long hair. Several nearly complete frozen mammoths have been found in the ice and permafrost of Alaska and Siberia.
