Necklace Made of Fossil Coral (Lithostrotionella)

Official West Virginia State Gemstone

Lithostrotionella Coral is very similar to the Petoskey Stone Coral of Michigan. Our Lithostrotionella is from the Mississippian Period (350 million years) of West Virginia. Lithostrotionella is the official State Gem Stone of West Virginia. It is technically not a gemstone, but rather the silicified Mississippian fossil coral preserved as the siliceous mineral chalcedony. It is found in the Hillsdale Limestone in portions of Greenbrier and Pocahontas Counties, West Virginia and is often cut and polished for jewelry and for display.

The photos at right show a specimen of natural stone and a polished cab of this beautiful coral.
